Microbiology is a relatively modern scientific discipline intended to objectively study microorganisms, including pathogens and nonpathogens. Recently, scientific revolutions involving paradigm shifts in the field of microbiology are visualized and the swiftness of such revolutions depends largely on the willingness of scientists to adopt novel ideas and perspectives.

To mention a few

  • The production of fuels and other high-value chemicals through microbial fermentation has the potential to provide a sustainable alternative to petrochemicals.
  • Probiotics as nutraceuticals and to solve digestion problems in humans
  • Isolation of metal leaching microorganisms from soil and treating them on¬† solid disposed wastes for removal of toxic metals.
  • Indian scientists have mapped the Mycobacterium tuberculosis genome, a first of its kind achievement that gives hope of discovering a cost effective drug for the tuberculosis disease that kills at least 330,000 Indians every year.

In National college the undergraduate students are given an opportunity to participate in the global effort to annotate the genome and proteome of Mycobacterium pathogen by joining the Open Source Drug Discovery (OSDD) team of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Production of useful enzymes from microorganisms, testing antimicrobial activity of plant extracts, protein characterisation from soil organisms etc are being carried out @ the Centre for Biosciences. Novel facilities like digital colony counter, Sonicator, Micro centrifuge unit etc are in routine use. These facilities are also open for outside research scholars, who carry out, a part of their research work @ the centre for Biosciences in National college
