ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF BC & IMB

The Department of Biochemistry and Industrial Microbiology is a multidisciplinary undergraduate programme. It was established in 2000. The department offers UG in Biochemistry and Industrial Microbiology and PG in Biochemistry. 

The UG programme is an interdisciplinary programme with Biochemistry as a core course Industrial Microbiology as a vocational course and Chemistry as a complementary course. The programme comes under the Career Related Choice Based Credit and Semester System CBCSS (2a) of the University Of Kerala. The bachelor’s degree is awarded by the University of Kerala. The program covers areas in basic biochemistry such as biomolecules, physiology, enzymology, metabolism, molecular biology, recombinant DNA technology techniques in biochemistry, fundamentals in microbiology, environmental microbiology, immunology, medical microbiology, microbial genetics food microbiology, and fermentation technology. 

The PG in biochemistry was established in the year 2015. The department lab is furnished with facilities for conducting studies in immunology, clinical biochemistry, microbiology and molecular biology. 

Our team harbours skilled and well-qualified faculties actively involved in both academics and extracurricular activities to the students. The department team includes over 100 members including 8 teaching faculties, 1 lab assistant and 95 students. 

After pursuing graduation and post-graduation our students got enrolled in various sectors like pharmaceutical industries, R&D lab, clinical biochemistry, food microbiology departments, hospitals, and teaching. 

Our students have procured ranks in the university exams over the past years. 

The course offers a promising curriculum and is research-oriented. The students have flexibility in selecting a focus area for pursuing their master’s degree in biochemistry, microbiology and other interdisciplinary subjects. The alumni is successfully involved in the interdisciplinary areas as promised by the curriculum
